Lake Wilkie is a spectacular short walk in Tautuku Bay, about 60 minutes south of Balclutha.
The walk starts right next to the highway where there is good, easy parking. The path is a well formed gravel track. There is one downhill incline that has the potential to get slippery at times and there is a very nice boardwalk that ventures into the lake itself.
The track travels through very nice podocarp forest leading to an excellent view over the lake - that can be accessed by wheelchair. DOC have placed interpretation panels along the track explain the lake's formation.
Please keep your dog on lead. FYI, the DOC website says no dog in Tautuku Bay however the sign at Lake Wilkie clearly indicates that dog are allowed on lead.
This is a stunning part of the country and a great way to spend time with your furry friends.
