Haurata High Country Retreat is a beautiful dog-friendly farm about an hours drive inland from Gisborne City. With a stunning river flowing down through the farm, Haurata offers a number of excellent short and long walks where you can discover hidden waterfalls, panoramic vistas and more.
We set out with Luna on the Red Walk - one of the longer walks up over farmland to the trig, and out to a fantastic bluff for some excellent photos. There was plenty of uphill at the start - not too steep, but a solid effort given how covidly-unfit we were. The sun was out so I strongly recommend packing sunscreen and taking a good sunhat. The walk diverts into a patch of QEII bush which was really nice to wander through. A bit more uphill and we reached the trig for lunch (and popped over to the region's telecommunications tower for a quick look). From here the views were spectacular and we could've stayed for hours enjoying the views. Heading back down, we diverted out to a spectacular bluff where I got a some great drone footage. Then, back down through luscious farmland and back home.
We took our time on this walk. Luna was in a truly happy place. She loves being out on a farm and was pretty well behaved give the sheep and lambs all around. We did need to be mindful to get her back on lead whenever the temptation was almost too great for her - she loves the sheep and wants to be friends - however, we know that most sheep would rather not make friends with a boisterous cavoodle.
We highly recommend this Farmstay and we're sure to be back again to explore. Find out all you need and make a booking to stay at
