9km fun run / walk event with doggos allowed
The Grand Traverse multi sport event has been held annually in Porirua for the last 15 years or so. It includes a range of multi sport events like mountain running, kayaking etc that take in some of the amazing spots of Porirua like Mt Whitireia and Colonial Knob.
Usually held in March (next one is 28 March, 2021), this year’s was held in early October amidst the Spring Nor’wester.
The event isn’t quite a loop but shuttles are provided as part of your entry fee (unless you have a doggo and then you need to make your own arrangements).
We parked one car up at the finish line (Whitireia Polytechnic) and the other at Titahi Bay Surf Club (start line).
It’s a great course they’ve laid out, challenging and enjoyable. The first stretch is the toughest (esp in Spring winds) as you climb from the beach up to Mt Whitireia. At the top you get amazing views of the exposed coastline that are pretty dramatic. The hill climb to get there is a bit of a goat track. Luna loved it!
Having taken in the views, it’s then a downhill jaunt to Shelley Bay where the first water station awaits you.
You then follow the coastline along the flat past the penguin area, boat mooring area, spoonbill hangout. You wind your way around the coast until you get to the boatsheds and start of the Onepoto Loop track. Luna’s pretty familiar with this track but seemed to enjoy seeing people in their costumes and just the fun of having lots of people on the track too.
From here you continue on along the main Titahi Bay road, alongside the Harbour’s edge to Whitireia Polytechnic and the event’s festivities.
The event has a great vibe and was a lot of fun. Luna was made to feel very welcome with lots of pats and attention. We’ll be signing up again in March 2021. Hope to see you there!
